Why It Sometimes Sucks to Live in the North
Let me think about this for a second...

Um, NO THANKS.
And yes, that was really the only option. I've tried to buy things from Tiger Direct before, but they say this is the "only" way to get items here.
A journal that will hopefully help out anyone who is thinking about moving to Nunavut or anywhere in Northern Canada.

On the bright side at least they are willing to ship to Nunavut. Many companies, including the one I work for, will not ship to PO Boxes or General delivery, which eliminate all of Nunavut if I am not mistaken. I work for Costco.ca. Last fall our call center was overloaded and I helped to answer some emails for them. I had a couple of frustrated Nunavut residents asking for assistance registering to shop on our site. The prices are great and shipping is included on 99% of items. A fantastic deal if only they would ship to PO Boxes.
I felt their pain because I remember what it was like when I was living up north. I remember one time when I was trying to order a set of knives off of TV and they insisted on a street address and not a PO Box for delivery. Since I worked at the Northern where lthe post office was I knew the chances were good that I would get my parcel as long as I could get it in town so I made up an address. 17 Beaver Lane. The company accepted it and I got my knives.
Joe,
I'd say that's pretty common. In Rankin I used to just put my civic address and it'd go to my P.O. box anyway since the post office people knew who I was. It was never a big deal. Sometimes if the website I'm ordering something off of recognizes the words, "p.o. box" I'd try to write it creatively, like pee oh bawx. Hey, whatever works, right? I should try just doing something like 123 POBOX PLACE."

Joe, everyone in Nunavut orders from Costco, I live on ### box st. I bet you can't officially tell people to fool the mail system when they call your help line however. lol
Jaime, One time star choice told my husband that we had to have at least a house number (we don't) because how would the ambulance know where to go (HAHAHAHHA). My husband calmly replied, I am the ambulance!
Can you have someone mail you up a router, that's RIDICULOUS shipping! There is no way it should cost that much! Doesn't dell ship for free, do they have routers?
Jen,
Dell does have free shipping (I'm expecting a TV from there this week, actually). I've already ordered and received a router from Best Buy. That screenshot is over a month old, I forgot I had taken it. :)
Haha @ the ambulance story. I wonder what the guy would have said if he was told that everyone up here knows where every person in town lives anyway. It's kind of a mind-blowing thought from a southern perspective!
Hello
Just reading your adventure. I am thinking of trying to get a teaching job there.....But I have one question.....it is kinda stupid.....do they have xbox live ???
Hey, I'm relatively new to the Arctic, as well. I've been keeping a blog forever, but its not geared to anything in particular.
I've been here about a month and a half, so far so good.

Hi Gish,
I checked out your blog and it's great. I'll add it to my bookmarks. I noticed you like Hawksley Workman and Pete Yorn...two of my favourites!
I'm actually not new to the north, I've been in Nunavut for nearly 2 years (it's flown by) but I recently moved to Iqaluit. :) I see you're in Hall Beach so I look forward to reading about it. To my knowledge, there aren't any bloggers there so it's always nice to see some communities get some recognition.

Hey Jamie - Planning to move to Nunavut within the next week. Just trying to meet some new people in the area. 24/M here (25 in December) Just wondering if you wanted to chat sometime. If you have MSN, I have a cam and a few pics also to let you know who I am and what I look like. Add me on MSN and we will talk sometime this week if your up for it before I leave. Davekitchen2011@Hotmail.com. O acme across your web site while searching for the cost of food up that way to calculate my spending and living costs. Very cute pic also by the way. Hope to hear from you soon!! ~Dave
I feel your pain. For a while i lived at a ski resort and there were no street names, everyone including the resort just had a PO box. So just made up an address and then called FedEx with instructions on how get there. I used to love the address they had in their system; Turn off highway x at Highway xx, then proceed xx km, turn right, at top of hill. My banking address was also my PO box so a lot of sites did not even let me order! Yaaaargh. Just before I left they brought in street names as a requirement for emergency services. Now I just use my parents address and paperless billing! like you and many of your readers have said look for the specials on free shipping. Dell has one right now. It would be super cool if someone had a site which listed who has free shipping now! love the blog keep it up.
