I guess it's time for a post, eh?
Life is back to normal post-holidays. I've been working out a lot, eating healthier, and going tanning. I also booked my Christmas holiday but that's not important right now.
I have yet another chapter in the book of Jaime and Her Ignorance Toward Vehicle Ownership. It's a little thing called registration. Tomorrow marks 1 year of owning my beloved Suzuki. It also marks 1 year since I had it registered and insured. My insurance is no problem, I got that covered. I pay an exorbitant amount to cover myself, it's under control. What I don't get is why the hell my registration expired in April and not August. I didn't pay much attention to the sticker on my polar bear license plate, but I knew somewhere in the back of my mind that I needed to renew it sometime in August.
Wrong! Last weekend I was pulled over by the lovely law enforcement officials of our dear city as part of Take Back The Night. The By-law officer took my insurance. "Ha!" he laughed, "Your insurance is expired!"
"No it isn't, I know for a fact it expires August 25."
"Yeah and what's the date today?!"
"August 14."
"Oh yeah."
That was a bit nerve-wracking but I chilled out and handed him my registration.
"AH HA! This is expired! It expired in April."
"Oh sh...no, really?"
I escaped without a ticket, but not without a lesson: Nunavut's Department of Motor Vehicles has seemingly arbitrary expiry dates for registration. If you know why this is, please explain.
And now, I've been getting quite a few question-comments so I'm going to answer them here.
Q: My family is also looking at Iqaluit. I am a Registered Nurse, so am looking at government positions, wondering what the housing is like that they provide?
A: There are many houses, townhouses, and apartments. Housing is decent. Any more specific, and you'd have to find out where you're living because each unit is different. I don't work for the GN and I don't live in GN housing so I'm not much help.
Q: Should I buy a car here or there, if there should I fly there..can you even drive all the way there? Is it safe, or just as safe as Ottawa for a single girl to live? I notice the salaries are quite high but does that just match the cost of living or can you actually make more money there? Is housing readily available? Is there a region that you recommend for someone that will be going to the North for the first time?
A: Whoa whoa whoa. First of all, you cannot drive to anywhere in Nunavut. You have no choice but to fly. You can buy a car down there and have it sealift'ed up, or you can buy one here. There are decent options in the larger communities as far as I know. In Iqaluit there is anyway.
It's reasonably safe but like anywhere in the world, if you put yourself in a dangerous situation, you may not be lucky. I don't walk around town by myself at night, but I don't in Ontario either. Other than that, no, you're not going to be mugged walking down the street in broad daylight. Not by a long shot.
Housing is available depending where you move and who your employer is. Some jobs provide housing, others don't. Iqaluit has some private accommodations, but it's better to have a place secured before you move here, and that goes for any community.
Yes, you will make money here assuming you don't spend it all. Don't assume it will be easy to save, but you probably won't be broke.
If you're going to the north for the first time and aren't sure if you'll like it, I suggest Iqaluit. We have familiar amenities here such as a gym, movie theatre, restaurants, bars, etc. If you're up for a challenge, anywhere in the north is your arctic oyster.
P.S. You won't be able to drive between communities. I suggest you do some more research before committing to moving here.
Q: I want to move to Nunavut. Can you email me at you@email.com?
A: Sorry, no. I do not send out general "how to move here!" emails. Please ask me a specific question and I can attempt to answer it. If I sent emails to everyone who left these comments, I'd have to quit my job and chain myself to my computer. I'm not a mind reader, you have to tell me what you want to know.
Q: Is the people friendly there? I want to spend some time there to know the mother nature and original living style of Nunavut. Is anyone willing to like to keep some one and show places?
A: Nunavut is very friendly. I can't answer your second question because I'm not on speaking terms with every single person here. Only they can answer for themselves.
As a general note, I enjoy answering questions, but please think your question through first. Don't make me smack my head against the keyboard, please. It's brand new and very pretty and I don't want to break it.
Also, welcome to Nunavut Tara and Jordan & Steph!! I've been impatiently checking your blogs for updates! I look forward to reading your observations.

I love your blog and would like to visit one day. I dont have a q about that (its just a dream at this point) but a specific one: when you say you cant drive between communities, is it becuase there are no roads, or becuase its too far, or too dangerous, or frozen or other reason? you can reply here if you have time, Ill read my follow up email :)
And p.s. are you learning the local language?
You do get a bazzar amount of weird questions.
Molly, you can't drive between communities because they are 1,000s of miles apart on arctic tundra or on islands separated by vast bodies of water that are frozen 10 months a year. I think if they ever did build roads, the biggest problem would be keeping them plowed. Flying is your only option. So I guess all your questions are right, it's too far, too dangerous..ect.
I also think I heard somewhere that there is only a total of 40km of paved road in the entire territory. For example there is not a single paved road in my community, including the run way at the airport.
I've been reading your blog for a little bit... I must admit; I didn't really check out the northern blogging community before I accepted my job! But after living here for 5months I've been surfing around a bit....
What i did have was 2 friends that were living and working in Nunavut--so they answered a lot of my "stupid" questions.... and now at coffee breaks or random times at the office... I ask "STUPID" questions... and get them answered for me... it's really a great laugh!
Cheers!
Sarah
Hi, I am moving to Iqaluit at the end of Sept and I want to bring my dog with me (my housing allows) however my job requires periodic travel throughout the territory, I haven't been able to find any info on Pet Sitting services or kennels I am wondering if you know if there are any services like this available. I really don't want to bring her and then not have anyone to watch her while I am gone. Your blog has been very helpful with information.
Anonymous,
There are no kennels or pet care businesses here. Depending on how long your travels will be in duration, I'd give the dog a second thought. I know it sucks but it may just not be feasible. Your only options are to bring the dog on your work trips, or find a friend who wants to have a part-time dog.
Thanks Jamie for the speedy response about pet sitting services, I really wanted to know before I submitted my housing application as I might get a better place if I don't have a dog, I will have to suck up the 14 months without her, it will be hard, but hey if I can leave my husband for 14 months I should be able to leave my dog ;)
Hey jaime! Nice to see you here again :-) I arrived in Pang on the 17th, but actually flew back to Iqaluit for a PD session a few days ago...heading to the Storehouse tomorrow night.
Everything has been super smooth. Well, ok, there was a problem with housing, but after a two-day phone tree hassle, a great place opened up for me. My sealift has actually arrived in Iqaluit already...after only 2 weeks!
My blog has gone pretty stale...boo. Still trying to work out the best way to access a stable link to the internet (tonight I've just been lucky).
Holy crap it's distracting in the Northmart here! The Northern or the Co-op in Pang are, ah-hm, how can I say, rather 'limited'. I'm shopping it up before I leave on Saturday.
Thanks for helping out so much; you made the move a lot easier.

Vehicle registration - is usually assigned a month to expire depending on your last name. My insurance is up in July here in Alberta but my registration is up in April (I'm a "G"), but before I got married I was a "B" and it was due in March. Pretty sure that's how all of the provinces/territories do it. That way they spread out all of the registrations evenly over the year.
I'm curious as to how open minded the North is in general and its cities in particular. Are they welcoming or hostile to people of color, gay people etc?
The registration expires at GN fiscal year end. :)

I don't really know, to be honest. I'm not a minority (besides being Caucasian in an Inuit territory) so I can't comment.
Anonymous #2:
My coworker told me his registration expires in May so I'm not too sure about that.
Nunavummiut Jaime, isnt the fact that you're a caucasion in living in inuit territory make you a minority..i thought thats how it works? lol
and to Anonymous, i would belive that most first nations people are not hostile to people of colour from my experience
Hi there I have to say I am sorry I asked a question then I did not want to bother you....I did not realize you got so many "stupid" questions and found them "annoying" I was just hoping for some help with my move north. Sorry to bother you
Anonymous,
Don't take it so personally. I'm always happy to help, but I do get asked the same questions over and over. You'll understand when you move north. :)

Hi Jaime,
I read your blog for some time while preparing to move to Nunavut. I'm here now (and have been for just over 4 weeks) in Gjoa Haven, and I wanted to thank you for all the information you have provided here. I started my own blog, but I haven't put a whole lot up on it yet. I haven't had much time. I'm a teacher and school started here on the 4th for teachers and the 6th for students, so since then it's be a whirlwind!
I second the "there is no paving in my community at all, not even the airplane runways" comment made by Jen earlier.
Whoops, I was signed into the wrong account! this would be my blog account.
Please make me a XXX.
I am glad to hear that we can ask questions I was a bit "ticked" when I saw your blog but I am glad to hear that you are honestly okay with us asking questions.
Hi, Lately I have been thinking that I would like to move up North. I was looking for information and found your blog. I would like to say thank you!
Since I have read your blog I am more determined than ever to move up North.
Here is my question for you. I have applied to several jobs, a few gov and a few non gov. Some of them closed about 2 weeks ago. I am just wondering if you have any idea on the length of time one may be waiting to hear anything? I have heard some say that it could be 2-3 months, I was hoping for something sooner but will be patiently waiting if that's the case.
Love your blog - thank you for sharing some of the details of your life up North. I am contemplating a move (I would be working for the Provincial Gov't) and have a kind of boring question that you may be able to answer. I like to work out just about every day - and own a treadmill her in Toronto that gets a lot or use. Is it possible to buy a treadmill in Iqaluit, or to have one shipped in?
Time for a new post, Jaime! ;)
Hi Jaime,
I can't find your Fb account anymore. I don't know if you deleted it, or blocked me (I really hope not).
Jeff just told me what's going on. I hope you're alright, please remember if you do want to talk, or just get together for Greys and a drink, please let me know.
*hugs*
Hello,
I've been offered a job in Iqaluit but there are no staff accoms included. I'm searching for a room, bachelor, shared accoms...anything really asap. Is there any way you, or any of your readers could kindly pass me along some inside tips? I've done the typical online searches and came up with one commercial property management company, however they have nothing available, and there seems to be fairly minimal people advertising. This I'm sure is due to a lack of housing, however I'm really hoping to get there asap. Sorry to use this forum, and hope you don't find it bothersome. I'm moving from Southern Ontario, and thanks to these blogs...I CAN'T WAIT!!!
Many Thanks Everyone :)
